Background and purpose: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a critical global health issue, with refugee women facing heightened vulnerability due to displacement, sociocultural barriers, and limited access to support. This study aimed to explore Afghan men’s perspectives on IPV against refugee women using the PRECEDE model, focusing on identifying predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors
Materials and Methods: A thematic analysis was conducted on semi-structured interviews with 17 Afghan men, selected via purposive sampling in Torbat Jam Camp, Iran. Interviews were conducted from August to October 2024. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA18 software. This qualitative study employed a thematic analysis approach guided by the PRECEDE model. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 Afghan men whose wives had reported IPV in the past two months. Participants were selected through purposive sampling until theoretical saturation was reached. The interview guide was based on PRECEDE constructs. Interviews were conducted between July and September 2023 at the Torbat Jam refugee camp clinic, recorded with consent, and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was performed using MAXQDA18 software, and themes were developed deductively in alignment with PRECEDE categories.
Results: A total of 17 Afghan refugee men participated. Through thematic content analysis, three main themes were identified: (1) Predisposing Factors, (2) Enabling Factors, and (3) Reinforcing Factors. Within these themes, 5 categories and 21 subcategories were extracted. Predisposing factors included categories such as perceived norms, attitudes, values, beliefs, perceived barriers and benefits. Enabling factors included skills, access to resources, and availability of services. Reinforcing factors encompassed social encouragement and cultural reinforcement of behavior.
Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight that predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors significantly shape men's violent attitudes and behaviors toward women. Targeted interventions addressing these factors can effectively reduce violence and promote healthier attitudes, contributing to a more respectful society.
