Background and Purpose: Nigeria’s disciplinary measures and the country’s general acceptance of them have drawn international attention. It is difficult to identify the underlying causes of these disciplinary actions. The frequent defence of culture and religion has not entirely explained the continual existence of these approaches. A generational perspective is required to analyze changes in children’s disciplinary practices in Nigeria and investigate their effects on parenting styles, health education, and child health.
Materials and Methods: A phenomenological qualitative study design was used to conduct research among mothers, children, and grandmothers. A total of 21 participants were selected using a purposeful sampling method. In this regard, the researcher conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews and administered a 10-question semi-structured questionnaire. The analysis was conducted using MAXQDA Analytics Pro 2022.
Results: Four categories were extracted from the data codes, each further subdivided into smaller subcategories. “Meaning of discipline,” “evolution of discipline,” “discipline methods,” and “effects of different discipline methods” are these categories. Major findings showed that 48% of participants considered discipline a form of child training, and 52.8% thought previous discipline techniques were more effective than current methods. Most parents defend their use of harsh discipline by citing cultural or religious obligations.
Conclusion: This study reveals a notable generational shift in Nigerian disciplinary methods, driven by changing religious and social norms. Given the cultural tradition, punitive punishment is still common, but there is a noticeable shift towards more contemporary approaches. These results highlight the vital role of health education in promoting healthy, balanced parenting practices. Future interventions should focus on evidence-based approaches that align with cultural values and achieve positive outcomes for children’s development.
